Take a closer look at weight-sensitive mechanisms
A New Chapter Begins: Welcome to Our Newsletter!
For over 50 years, Imarc Industries has been an international benchmark in the field of technical components for office seating. Specializing in the design and manufacture of mechanisms, bases, backrests, seats, and accessories, Imarc combines advanced technology and engineering expertise to provide reliable, modular, and customized solutions to world-class industrial partners. Our process is entirely in-house—from design and development to industrial production—with a steadfast commitment to quality and sustainability.
In this newsletter, we would like to take a closer look at a product range that represents the flagship of IMARC production: weight-sensitive mechanisms for office chairs.
The Geometry of Movement and Postural Balance
We often view a chair as a simple piece of furniture, but from an engineering perspective, it is a complex mechanical system designed to manage biomechanical loads. In this technical edition of our newsletter, we explore the concept of “weight-sensitivity” mechanism, the driving system behind the technical office chair and the importance of applied kinematics in backrests.
What exactly is a “weight-sensitive” system? In ergonomic terms, a weight-sensitive mechanism is a system that automatically regulates seat tension. Unlike manual mechanisms, where the user must adjust a knob to find the correct resistance, a weight-sensitive system detects the user’s gravitational load and instantaneously translates it into a proportional backrest counter-pressure.
The primary advantage is dynamic customization: the chair responds differently to a 60 kg user compared to a 90 kg user, ensuring both receive the right level of support without any manual intervention.

The IMARC Proposal: Ergonomic Geometry and Force Balancing
Our solution stands out due to a motion geometry engineered to maximize active ergonomics. These are the two technical pillars of our system:
Continuous Back Support
While many competing mechanisms create a “gap” between the pelvis and the backrest during recline, our geometry maintains a constant contact point. This ensures the lumbar region receives perfect support at every degree of inclination.

Automatic Force Balancing
Thanks to advanced kinematics, our system features an effective automatic balance of backrest force proportional to the user’s weight. Unlike many other mechanisms on the market, it requires no manual corrections. The transition from an upright to a reclined position is fluid, eliminating the “free-fall” sensation or, conversely, excessive resistance that strains the abdominal muscles. Below you can see a graph showing the performance advantage of using our self-weighting mechanism over those of our competitors.

Selection Guide: Which mechanism to choose?
While weight-sensitive technology is the pinnacle of automation, every context requires a specific solution. The IMARC range allows designers to choose from various configurations to meet specific needs for comfort, performance, and production cost.
Comparative Analysis of Weight-Sensitive Models
| Model | Distinctive Feature | Key Advantages | Ideal For… |
|---|---|---|---|

| M375 | Total Integration | “Invisible” mechanism that disappears into the seat; fluid and sleek silhouette. | High-design projects where seat aesthetics must remain clean. |
Focus on the Range
M200

Built on a pioneering concept, this mechanism eliminates the need for traditional springs and handwheels. Instead, its tension adjustment is ingeniously achieved through the mechanism’s structure and carefully selected materials. The open-sided design introduces a striking aesthetic that emphasizes its state-of-the-art engineering and lightweight construction. The mechanism can be used in free swinging mode (up to 16° backward) or can be locked in work position.
M870
Say goodbye to manual adjustments and hello to intuitive comfort. Our innovative weight-sensitive synchro mechanism automatically adapts the backrest tension based on the user’s body weight—no knobs, no handwheels, just seamless support. Whether you’re settling in for a focused work session or sharing the chair with others throughout the day, the mechanism’s unique balance structure ensures personalized comfort every time. Experience a chair that moves with you effortlessly.

M770

Our super slim weight-sensitive synchro mechanism is engineered for effortless comfort in a sleek form just 7 cm in height. This simplified system features a single block in the working position, with two long levers that keep controls easily accessible while seated. The mechanism automatically adjusts the backrest tension to match the user’s body weight, delivering personalized support without the need for manual fine-tuning. Experience intuitive ergonomics, now in a more refined, space-saving design.
M860
Specifically engineered for backrest screwless assembly, this mechanism is equipped with two pins for each side to link the backrest support with one smooth movement. Furthermore, the seat plate is compatible with all IMARC seats designed for rapid assembly. No tools, no hassle—just a complete chair, assembled in minutes.

M375

It’s an innovative mechanism crafted to integrate seamlessly with a specific seat, creating a fluid, unified silhouette where the mechanism becomes invisible, blending effortlessly into the chair’s design. This range offers flexibility to suit every need, including not only weight-sensitive synchro mechanisms but also permanent contact and fixed mechanisms. Whether prioritizing simplicity, dynamic support, or personalized comfort, each mechanism delivers intuitive performance without compromising on style.
Weight-sensitive mechanisms represent a strategic technical solution in modern office chair design, perfectly balancing adaptability, ergonomics, and ease of use.
